Just how Byron Shire residents will keep the taps running in the future has been simmering in the background for decades. Even without the extra pressures of climate change, this was a pressing problem. The last few years have been unusually wet, and we have all conveniently forgotten the drought years of water shortages, restrictions, buying water, and truck deliveries.
Rous Water is a public utility that provides treated water to Northern Rivers councils, including Ballina Shire, Byron Shire, Richmond Valley, and Lismore City. These councils then ‘on-sell’ this water to residents via local distribution networks. Mullumbimby, unique in many ways, has had its water sourced from Lavertys Gap in Wilson’s Creek. In the past, with its can-do spirit, it has also supplied the town with hydroelectric power. The cost of upgrading this utility to continue this service is contested. The easier, cheaper option is to go with Rous Water, but this decision has split the council.
Let’s talk to a water engineer
Elia Hauge, newly elected and youngest councillor, led the push to switch from Rous and relook at Laverty’s Gap option. Elia has the added advantage of being a water engineer, so it seemed fitting to sit down and ask her opinion during this accompanying interview.
